In March 2024, the tank of the Zeesleper Elbe underwent treatment to protect it from further corrosion and prevent the loss of steel thickness. The treatment involved the application of nC Corrosion Passivator Fluid, a protective coating that can be directly applied over rust. In addition, several areas on the deck that were prone to recurring rust have been treated. For these spot repairs, nC Corrosion Passivator Primer 2-in-1 was used, an overcoatable solution that can be applied directly over rust.

Pre-Treatment of the Zeesleper Elbe

Treatment of the Ballast Water Tank: Loose rust and coating were removed from the tank. Once cleaned, the corroded areas were prepared for treatment using nC Corrosion Passivator Fluid.

On Deck: Loose rust and coating were also removed from the deck. The surface was degreased, leaving a clean, corroded area ready for application of the nC Corrosion Passivator Primer 2-in-1, a direct-to-rust coating.

Application Process

nC Corrosion Passivator Fluid can be applied with a brush, roller, or by spraying. In this case, the surface was treated using an airless spray. When spraying, the consumption is approximately 1 liter of fluid per 5 m².

Corrosion Passivator Fluid

Corrosion Passivator Fluid is single-layer coating that offers a practical and efficient solution for protecting corroded surfaces in tanks and confined spaces. It simplifies maintenance by requiring minimal surface preparation, reducing both costs and downtime. After application, the coating changes to a dark anthracite color, enabling easy identification of active rust spots during inspections. These areas can then be quickly repaired with a brush, roller, or spray. During the inspection, it was observed that a small section of the tank had been missed during the application. The overlooked area was easily treated with a roller.

nC Corrosion Passivator Primer 2-in-1

For the spot repair on the deck, a brush was used to apply a very thin layer of nC Corrosion Passivator Primer 2-in-1. This passivator stabilizes the corroded surface, creating a durable base that can be coated with any one- or two-component metal primers or topcoats. By stopping the corrosion process before applying the coating, it provides long-lasting protection for the entire coating system against recurring corrosion from underneath.

Results conservation of the Zeesleper Elbe

The ballast water tank was treated in a single day. Spot repairs on the deck can also be completed quickly and efficiently, as they do not require extensive surface pretreatment. In this way, our Corrosion Passivator contributes to the preservation of this beautifully maintained maritime heritage.
