Corrosion passivation ballast tanks HEBO Lift 8
Date:
January 2023
Location project:
Zwartsluis NL
Client:
Hebo Maritiemservice B.V.
Application:
HEBO Lift 8
Product(s):
Corrosion Passivator - Fluid
Preparation:
Remove mud and loose rust
Application method:
Spraying and floating
In the first week of January, we were at work at HEBO Marineservice B.V. in Zwartsluis. Here we treated three ballast tanks of the HEBO Lift 8 with nC Corrosion Passivator – Fluid in one day. The Fluid is designed to treat hard-to-reach areas, such as ballast tanks, bunks and spikes. Through floating, full coverage is achieved. The work is described in detail in the project report below.
Checking the ballast tanks
The first step during corrosion passivation is to check the ballast tanks. Upon inspection, we saw no peculiarities. The tanks had been drained and cleared of mud, so we could start right away.
Distributing the Fluid across the Tank
To ensure complete coverage, we sprayed the ballast tank tops before beginning the float process.
The required Fluid is distributed between the rafters at the bottom of the tank. The nC Corrosion Passivator – Fluid is made to float on water.
Filling up ballast tanks
Filling the ballast tanks is done in 2 steps. First, we fill the tank with water to a level just above the first rafters. This gives the Corrosion Passivator a chance to distribute properly. Then the tank can be completely filled, at a maximum rate of 20 centimeters per minute.
Checking the ballast tanks after treatment
After treatment with nC Corrosion Passivator – Fluid, a color change occurs, from rust color to dark purple. This makes inspecting the tanks easy.
Not harmful to humans and the environment
Since no solvents, heavy metals or toxic substances are used, working with nC Corrosion Passivator is not harmful to people or the environment. The water from the ballast tanks can therefore be emptied directly into the surface water after treatment.
Long-term protection against corrosion influences
Within a day, three ballast tanks of the HEBO Lift 8 were treated with nC Corrosion Passivator – Fluid. After approximation, the tanks are again long-term protected against corrosion influences such as heat, moisture, salt and oxygen.
